Holcot

Holcot literally meaning cottage in the hollow has seen several changes of name since its listing in the Doomsday Book as Holecote.

Pleasantly situated in the rolling countryside to the north of Northampton, this peaceful village probably now sees more traffic and visitors than in years past, due to the proximity of Pitsford Reservoir.  This popular amenity on the doorstep of Holcot has many attractions for walkers, cyclists, sailorís etc. and is a haven for bird life.

The village is compact, centred around the fine church of medieval origin, standing on high ground, which is famed for its fourteenth century wall paintings.  These murals, which at one point, were in great danger of being lost forever, have been the subject of much recent fundraising, and hopefully restoration and preservation will ensure that future generations will be enabled to appreciate them.

In common with most small villages, agriculture played a major part in the life of the community up until the Second World War.  A reminder of these times is seen in the old sheep-wash, which after cleaning and restoration now provides habitat for local water birds.

The White Swan Inn at the bottom of the main street is a welcome source of sustenance for the hungry or thirsty walker.
